I don't know how long it's been since you saw the film, but there's nothing remotely resembling a "getaway" in that opening scene. O-Dog is in no hurry to leave the store. He has the presence of mind to stick around and rob the place (which he hadn't planned), and is completely cool and collected throughout the aftermath; I just don't believe it wouldn't occur to him to at least try to destroy the physical evidence. Likewise, I don't believe the scene where he pops the basehead who offers to blow him and then casually offers his friends the guy's sandwich as if nothing serious had just happened -- as if killing somebody was no bigger a deal than littering. Life was cheap in South Central back then, but not that cheap.

So, sure, people make mistakes, and the Hughes Bros. surely could have written and/or directed the opening scene in a way that would make it entirely plausible that the kids would leave fingerprints behind. As actually written and directed, however, it does seem fairly preposterous to me. (The passing around of the security tape, on the other hand, I buy with no problem.)

That's Ed, it's the "bland" in my formulation that's more objectionable to me. I really find this film quite dull.md'ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06055853987416332662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8838733.post-48857448985009114712012-01-13T12:54:51.938-05:002012-01-13T12:54:51.938-05:00You forgot "... and gave Skandies Decade Poll...You forgot "... and gave Skandies Decade Poll points to." And this same reason is why I am picking on things that are objectively inaccurate and/or so unique to Mike that the rest of us can ignore.

"black kids who don't give a fuck, too, are generally aware that leaving tons of fingerprints at the scene of your murder ... is a very bad idea"

Yes, they are aware of all sorts of things in the abstract. And yet they don't always act accordingly or with perfect perspicacity, especially on deadline (says the newspaper editor who deals with far less stressful-stakes deadlines than making a getaway before the cops come). And young black kids who don't give a fuck (and other folk) make far far FAR stupider mistakes than that. Like leaving your cell phone behind because you insisted on picking it up last thing out the door because it needed every last second bit of juice -- and thus forgot about it. Marines are generally aware that you don't piss on corpses. And that if you do, you don't videotape yourself doing it. (Or pass around videotapes of your Korean grocery store murder.) How would anybody ever get convicted of murder in Mikeland? Human beings are also spontaneous and/or id-driven creatures, not the rationalistic automatons that seem to define your limits of credulity.

"cute little kids who clearly have no function except to potentially take a bullet at some point."

Clearly?* THAT was the point?

I think this is just your child-allergy speaking cuz I'm pretty sure he serves at least other function that involves NOT taking a bullet. Like maybe there was another child in the movie who saw his parents kill and/or die, but lived to go on and ...
--------------------
* Must resist a SOCIAL NETWORK and FOUR LIONS script joke! But black kids who don't give a fuck, too, are generally aware that leaving tons of fingerprints at the scene of your murder (however spontaneous, and it's not like they run out the door in a panic seconds later) is a very bad idea, and there are plenty of excellent genre movies that don't feature cute little kids who clearly have no function except to potentially take a bullet at some point (or any other element on that level of sheer hoariness).md'ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06055853987416332662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8838733.post-56124140943589496052012-01-13T11:54:42.990-05:002012-01-13T11:54:42.990-05:00"That Jada Pinkett Notyetsmith's innocent..."That Jada Pinkett Notyetsmith's innocent kid doesn't wind up getting killed in the crossfire afforded me one less opportunity to roll my eyes, it's true, but a good movie wouldn't appear to be setting that moment up in the first place."

I see ... a good genre movie (or any movie that uses any common trope, no matter how or to what end) is therefore impossible.
