Since most folks couldn't be bothered to see this underrated romcom, I may as well provide a small taste. She deserves an award just for her dismissive hand flip when the salesman (Rob Corddry, holding his own) corrects her re: bullets vs. shells. If you like this scene, consider renting the movie—roughly half of it is this sharply written and acted, and the other half (the main storyline) is usually at least tolerable.
(Sorry about the anamorphic squeeze; it's the only clip I can find.)

Wow. In the space of a short clip, she established a character so loathsome — ignorant, belligerent, AND condescending! quite the trifecta! — that the thought of spending 97 minutes with her makes my skin crawl. Do they give awards for that?
Also - Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada.
Do you have that problem with, oh, I dunno, Daffy Duck? Since when are comedic characters supposed to be admirable? She might be insufferable as the lead, but she's not the lead.
Blunt is almost as awesome, but she's doing fine without me pimping for her.
Also - Parker Posey in Superman Returns.
you might want to include the actress's name somewhere
If you don't recognize Jessica Alba when you see her, that's not my problem.
Zooey Deschanel is the most frustrating actress in the business. I loved her in The Good Girl, hated her in All the Real Girls (of course, that's mostly because I hate the way Green directs his actors: "OK, now act like you have a very mild case of Down's Syndrome! Aaand action!"), and she was just plain awful in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But now, judging from that clip, I wouldn't mind seeing that Oscar nomination you're espousing.
Of course, big sister Emily is the one with the real talent. She almost made Boogeyman watchable, single-handedly.
I fall in love with Zooey every time I see her in a movie. It's really not healthy. And you're right about how awesome she is in this. It's sad that'll it'll probably take the Janice Joplin movie (which she is admittedly perfect for) to get her the real notice she's deserved for years.
I love me some Zooey Deschanel, but I don't think she's found a role worthy of her yet. I didn't enjoy her in this part at all. I thought she phoned it in. If I ever get around to writing my script, she'd be my first pick for leading lady.
As for the movie in question, all I can say for it is it wasn't as awful as I expected--even considering my aversion to McConaughey. I just wish Sarah Jessica Parker would turn in her ingenue card right about now.
Good to have you back in more frequent rotation, MD'A.
Pax out,
