Yes We Cannes.

Astounding. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. Hopefully I won't now ruin the whole thing by showing up at the festival and allotting every single picture 47 points of criticism*. (If that happens, I'll try to at least be witty about it.)

Turns out somebody has since kicked in another $20. Fundable allows me to accrue pledges beyond the goal amount until their deadline (12 Feb.), so if you're arriving late and would still like to be a part of this miracle, please do be. Any additional funds will go toward Toronto, which I was able to attend last year only because a generous friend let me stay in his hotel room gratis. (And he's now making grumpy noises about never returning, so good luck with that again.) Plus, the more demonstrable evidence I have that people enjoy my writing enough to spend actual cash money on it, the better my chances of landing the sort of synergistic gig Ryan Wu talks about in the comments two posts below.

Still, this is already a success beyond anything I'd thought possible. 26 days seemed like it wouldn't be anywhere near long enough; I'd expected that it would take two or even three months to accumulate that much cash. Color me humbled.

Oh, and if anybody out there in the editorial world is looking for some kick-ass Cannes coverage, let me know. I'll likely be writing a wrap article for the Las Vegas Weekly, but it'd be nice to file daily blog reports somewhere a bit more conspicuous than hereabouts, especially if that gets me a better press badge. Compensation highly negotiable. Let us rap.

Thanks guys. Truly.

* Speaking of which, I'm briefly quoted in this Wall Street Journal piece about critical ratings systems, though the author wisely chose to ignore my use of the retarded 100-point scale.

Tryied to donate. It seems impossible to do so if the "state" field in not filled, and, since there is no Brazilian state in the list...

Maybe I'll be in NY this summer, will stop by and push the cash under your door...

good stuff, glad it worked out.

question: do you think you'll feel inclined to NOT w/o on as many films as you usually do?

Gilidor said...

No! I love the w/o, they often lead to the funniest, most cutting blurbs!

Glad it worked out, and I'm glad I was able to contribute. Your Cannes coverage has always been my favorite.

@Gilidor: I agree! The W/Os are hilarious, plus they allow md'a to see more films that might turn out to be good.

Yeah, I'm the dude who put down the first twenty. I knew the dough was flying in fast, but I really thought once it got to the halfway point, things would slow down. So when I checked later and saw that the goal had been met, I was a little embarrassed for not kicking in, especially after the noises I made earlier in the blog about wanting to support you.

Anyway, I thought maybe you'd use the extra money to treat yourself to a nice dinner, but hey, Toronto works too.
