Great to see the support for SYNECDOCHE, NY here. It's a jumble but I'd pick it above a lot of the more flawless offerings that'll place high on all the lists out there. To me, it's this decade's MAGNOLIA - an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink auteur statement.

Great list overall, AVB! I'd post my own but that seems extraneous/presumptuous. Love to see your collective list for the original Oughts! I have a feeling ELECTROCUTING AN ELEPHANT would be a lock for #1.

Wow, Dave Cowen only got one of his 10 Best Film choices in the Top 20. Maverick much?

Theo said...

Scratch that: Dan Sallitt got none.

I decided there was little point in holding off on the last two entries, since everybody knew what they were. And I'm concerned that Vimeo's gonna delete my new account any second now—it only took them about two days to kill the original one after I put the Julianne Moore clip up.

There will be one final summary post tomorrow.

2 Asian films out of 20 is better than nothing I guess...

Despite a radical decline in my movie-watching habits this decade (replaced by reading classic Caspar and Little Dot comics), I've seen all but 1 of the top 10 (sorry, The New World) and 15 of the top 20.

I'd be hard-pressed to choose between ITMFL and Mulholland Dr. as my own #1 slot, but Dogville is still a film I admire far more than I like.

So nice to see other votes for the remarkable LATE MARRIAGE.

Now that all the results are posted, my single regret is not voting for BEFORE SUNSET. What a beauty.

The real crime is the complete lack of African, Australian, South American, and Antarctican movies.

Also, the lack of Inuit representation. Where art thou, ATARNARJUAT?

Andrew Dignan said...

So unless I'm reading this incorrectly, there is not a single representative in the top 20 from the years '06,'08, & '09. Not sure I have a point to make or a theory to explain why. Just interesting.

I'd be curious to see Vern do some top ten lists; he doesn't seem to be much of a list-maker, though. Has anyone ever tried to cajole him into it?

Still rewatching the earlier decade films, but my likely top 10:

1. Inglorious Basterds
2. Moulin Rouge!
3. Zodiac
4. In the Mood for Love
5. City of God
6. No Country for Old Men
7. I (Heart) Huckabees
8. Elephant
9. Mulholland Dr.
10. Brick

Hard to leave off The Best of Youth, Ratatouille, The Man Who Wasn't There, and so many others. A good decade for documentaries, too.
