Skandies: #20

[For those of you new to the Skandies, below is what placed 20th in each of these categories. Tomorrow all the #19s will be unveiled, then #18 the next day, etc. If you just want to know who won, check back here in 20 days.]

Picture: Whiplash (56/5)
Director: Roberto Minervini, Stop the Pounding Heart (42/4)
Actress: Agata Trzebuchowska, Ida (47/6)
Actor: Miles Teller, Whiplash (62/8)
S. Actor: Sam Rockwell, Laggies (35/3)
S. Actress: Emily Blunt, Into the Woods (41/5)
Screenplay: Alejandro G. Iñárritu & Nicolás Giacobone & Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. & Armando Bo, Birdman, or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (51/7)
Scene: Gao family inn/roast pork, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (38/2)

HISTORY:

I believe Stop The Pounding Heart is Minervini's first theatrical release in the U.S. In any case, he's certainly never placed before.

Teller placed 16th last year for The Spectacular Now. Rockwell gets his fifth career Skandies nod, having landed at #13 for Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), #4 for Joshua (2007), #11 for Moon (2009), and #16 in Supporting for Seven Psychopaths (2012). Blunt receives her fourth, all in Supporting; the three previous were for My Summer of Love (#10s, 2005), The Devil Wears Prada (#4s, 2006), and Looper (#10s, 2012). Trzebuchowska is new.

Of the four Birdman screenwriters, none has previously placed. Until Biutiful, González Iñárritu worked from scripts by Guillermo Arriaga.

Curious who the other roast pork voter was (Matt?). My deepest thanks whoever it was.

I assumed your campaigning had paid off, but the other vote came from Bryant Frazer so it may be happenstance.

I had already been considering it -- I'm a big old Stephen Chow fanboy and that scene was clearly a show-stopper -- but seeing Vadim flogging it on Twitter solidified my resolve. I'm totally disappointed in everyone else.

It better only be the first of two Tsai-meal scenes... #JesSayin

The best scene from Journey to the West was the body-take-over Cyrano de Bergerac moment gone awry.
