HISTORY:

Park placed 13th for Oldboy (2005) and 18th for Stoker (2013).

Washington has 20 full years of Skandie history, having first placed at #18 for Courage Under Fire (1996). He nearly won in 2001, coming in 2nd for Training Day; also, 15th for The Hurricane (1999), 17th for Inside Man (2006), and 16th for Flight (2012). Goodman gets his first nod for a film not directed by the Coens, having placed 5th and 10th in the same category for The Big Lebowski (1998) and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), respectively. Beckinsale makes her first appearance in the top 20 since her last appearance in a Whit Stillman film; she placed 4th in Supporting for The Last Days of Disco (1998). McKinnon is new.

Jarmusch's screenplays for Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (2000) and Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) placed 20th and 13th, respectively. (He made the cut in Director for Dead Man, but not in Screenplay.)

If #5 Lead Female has 154 points or fewer, I for one WON'T forget what you said below.

Also ... neither FENCES actor getting s "nomination"?? #SkandiesSoWhite

We do have five actors of color among the 20 "nominees" this year (though only one is African-American). Fences, as a limited Christmas release, was relatively underseen—Davis' and Washington's 10 votes apiece came from only 14 potential voters.

I've obviously mostly kidding, but that fact kinda displaces the question, no? How come only 14 folks (likely < 40% of the AVB) saw it? Timing doesn't seem the reason -- it was released into multiplexes and had major stars and obvious awards contenders (IOW, we're not talking TONI ERDMANN or PATERSON release-wise here)

So I totally misread D'Angelo's comment:

so 21-25 is ... CERTAIN WOMEN, LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP, HELL OR HIGH WATER, AQUARIUS and ...?

You're actually missing two, because one of the above is wrong. (Answer will be up in less than 24 hours.)

I read this as saying that one of the above would land in the top 5 (at #6, as it would be slated to appear in "less than 24 hours"), thus pushing out one of the apparent locks.

Both Toni Erdmann and Paterson had been on the fest circuit since May, whereas Fences skipped it altogether. So the only opportunity to see it was to head to the multiplex during the month between its release and the deadline, which is a time during which lots of voters are frantically playing catch-up and thus practicing triage. Fences is obviously a hugely acclaimed play, but after Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters, "directed by Denzel Washington" isn't likely a huge draw for this crowd, regardless of the project's pedigree. Nor did it get the sort of wildly positive response from initial AVB viewers that would make it seem like a must-see. So I suspect it was a low priority for many.

"We do have five actors of color ..."

Who am I missing: Braga, Garcia, Ali, Ogata, and ...?

My first opportunity to see FENCES was 24 hours after Skandies balloting closed. Sorry, Viola.
