Skandies Decade Bonus: The Singletons (Actors)

Okay, it took me a little while but here's the corresponding list for the performances. 62 got multiple votes; these are the other 101.

If there's one notable casualty of voters' reluctance to consider very recent work, it's Hafsia Herzi, who appears below despite her hefty Passiondex in last year's Supporting Actress race. I feel like I myself would likely have given her points had I seen the film earlier in the decade—by the time I did, I had a shortlist already prepared and found it hard to boot anyone. I guess that means that someone joined me for Nick Nolte's great work in Clean and Anna Faris in Smiley Face. Good job other voters.

It's really sad to see Samantha Morton only got one vote for her great work in Morvern Callar, that was one of the last performances I eliminated from my short list to get down to the final ten. Good job representing, M. Sicinski.

Based on this post, the following is a list of recent Skandies toppers and each topper's known vote totals in the decade poll:

Thurman, 2003 #1 Actress = 1 vote.
Stauton, 2004 #1 Actress = ? (probably 2 as she's likely finishing out of the top 20).
Kekelli, 2005 #1 Actress = 1 vote.
Mirren, 2006 #1 Actress = goose egg.
Van Houten, 2007 #1 Actress = 1 single lonely vote.
Marinca, 2008 #1 Actress = ? (0 or 2 as she's likely out of the top 20).

Instead of consensus favorites, the results have yielded such anomalies as Dern (yay), Bjork (boo), and Phoenix (ho-hum). If Huppert is still forthcoming (and Kidman for Dogville a decent possibility), as I expect, we'll have a decade top ten consisting mostly of also-rans.

Overbeck, whoever and wherever you are, nice work on noticing Angela Bettis. I'm not kidding when I say she's on my own personal short list for Performance of the Decade. Just a wonderful, distinct creation, her May. And about as credible a descent into madness as I've ever seen put on screen. Kudos!

phew ... I'm still an intact male ...

And I can't say I'm surprised I stood alone with Russell Crowe in CINDERELLA MAN mostly because he had so many good roles that none stand out (it was an "auteur" vote on my part, I freely admit) and partly because certain elements of his performance needs a boxing fan to appreciate (and I'm pretty sure I'm the only Skandies voter who's a big fan of the sport).

I would be curious who else voted for Ryan Gosling in THE BELIEVER -- the other performance I voted for where I thought there was a good chance I might be the sole voter. The film was unfortunately a bit underseen IIRC and I think it may have been (unjustly) eclipsed in Movienerdville by his performance in HALF NELSON. Goodjob other jewishnazilovingbud

thanks rightwingbud, that was me. Although as always, it makes me a little nervous when we agree on anything. Also this recession is the poor people's fault for buying homes they could not afford, leave the bankers alone in my opinion.

Also thanks buds for making me look like a dick for voting for a performance in my own picture.

Man, Samantha Morton in MORVERN CALLAR and Jeon Do-yeon in SECRET SUNSHINE would have to be in my top 5 of the decade.

md'a said...

Not surprising that Jeon got only one vote since almost nobody has had the chance to see Secret Sunshine. (The AVB is mostly civilians, not critics.) I myself was unimpressed by her performance—it's certainly a lot of acting, but the character never seemed coherent to me.

Jeon was on my shortlist; Secret Sunshine, and her performance in particular, opened up for me quite a bit on repeat viewing (and in discussing them with a classroom full of students).

I figured Morton was pretty solidly admired for her work in Callar, but decade polls are tough, and it's just such a recessive, inward performance that it can't stand up in a tight race against your Ledgers and your Wattses.

Glad to know there are other sane men and women in the world re: Gyllenhaal / Secretary.

Yesssssss! Glad to see Huppert got some Singleton love!

Herzi was a bit of a long-shot for making the final 8, but I figured Passiondex > recency. Seeing Thurman here, though, kind of floored me; I guess love for that performance was wider than it was deep.

V. good job Nictate voting for Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton. I would have guessed I was the only person in the world who would have had her on my Best Perfs of the Aughts list.

Well, I'm happy Marina Hands got at least one vote.

Robert Fuller said...

Or, I should say, at least got one vote.

Not sure if Secret Sunshine ever got U.S. distribution, but it played Cannes, TIFF and NYFF -- given this crowd's cinephilia, I'm guessing this translates to at least a dozen voters having seen it, even if the AVB is civilian-heavy.

Pleasantly surprised someone else voted for Devos for La Femme de Gilles; thought I'd be the only one. Sorry to have forgotten to consider Akinshina.

Nictate said...

I'm glad you were happy to see Tilda on the list, ML.

There was one moment in particular where she floored me in Michael Clayton. She was simply getting dressed in the morning light, but there was so much subtle vulnerability and sadness in her quotidian movements. Remarkable. A nicely quiet contrast to her neurotic-force-of-nature brilliance in Julia.

Jeon was on my shortlist, as was Moon So-ri. Guess I have a thing for Korean chicks bugging out.

Others I wish found room for: Greggory for GABRIELLE, Gene Hackman in TENENBAUMS, Dern for INLAND EMPIRE, Devos for like three pictures. Also: Patrick Warburton in THE WOMAN CHASER. Why is this guy not a gigantic star?

LOL at Evan Rachel Wood vote.

msic said...

Nice try, Ryan. The Woman Chaser is a 1999 film. But still, Warburton ftw.

Well, I'm happy that Robert Fuller is happy that Marina Hands got at least one vote.

That's Depardieu's son in 'Duchess', correct? RIP.

I guess we'll assume that Casey Affleck's turn in ASSASSINATION received multiple votes, yeah? Cuz he's high up there on my invisible ballot.

futurefree said...

I gots to know: does this mean Steve Zahn's performance in Rescue Dawn got multi-votes, or zero votes? Either way, dude was robbed. Overlooked performance of the decade.

Theo said...

Agreed on Zahn: I had him on the shortlist, but couldn't quite fit him in. He placed at No. 5 in '07, but I'm guessing he fell through the cracks in this poll.

I'm pretty happy with my Perfs, mildly surprised someone else voted for Danny Huston - I mean it *was* 9 years ago - just wish I'd remembered Sergio Castellito for MY MOTHER'S SMILE (forgot even to check through undistributed movies).

Oh and yeah - Michelle Williams, ME WITHOUT YOU. Good job Bilge. How soon we forget, etc.

Um... okay.

Victor said...

"(forgot even to check through undistributed movies)."

... which was why I didn't even consider Jeon Do-yeon in SECRET SUNSHINE, though I definitely should have. Still, looking over my ballot -- hard to imagine knocking off any of the 10 I already have listed.

(There's also the complicating factor that, also because my methodology was to look over my Skandies ballots, I also overlooked, and so may try to squeeze in, a 2009 performance that's a mortal lock to get 30 pts in a few months.)

Private Joker said...

Jason: Uma Thurman, Kill Bill Vol. 1 (Overbeck)

Yeah, I threw her 7 pts on my ballot for Kill Bill Vol. 2, though KBV1 was the film I threw (8) points on the movie ballot.

The "retarded decision" (as Skander puts it) to separate the two films is what caused poor Uma to be a singleton and thus most likely knocked out of the top 20 (though apparently at least one other person credited KBV2).

I should have sent an email blast to the Skandies voters who I knew liked KB and Uma so we could band together and decide which of the two KBs we'd give her points for (even though the performance is obviously a terrific arc from one film to the next) so this wouldn't have happened.

Also, good job to Donna for Casey Affleck in Gerry, and Butcher for Clooney in Intolerable Cruelty -- both were among the 5 performers who got cut from my ballot at the last minute.

And another good job to whomever was the other voter(s) who sided with me on Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Mysterious Skin. I was sure I'd be a singleton on that. As for Dan Sallitt -- nice pick with Hanks on Charlie Wilson's War. I ended up going with Cast Away for Hanks but CWW was a very close call.

futurefree said...

Wow, somehow I misremembered Zahn as not even placing in '07. For some reason I didn't think he'd gotten many votes aside from Theo and Michael S., which was not even remotely the case. Thanks for the pleasant surprise, amnesiac brain of mine.

For the record, even if I added together Thurman's votes for both parts of Kill Bill, she'd still be in a distant 42nd place.

Wow, that surprises me. With the lack of great heroic, wide-emotional-ranging roles for women this decade, I figured Uma would be a consensus. I haven't seen Inland Empire (nor have I stabbed myself in the abdomen), so Dern may be terrific, but some of the female performances that have made it in the top 20 (e.g. Kilcher, as much as I liked her work) just don't measure up to Uma.

Bilge Ebiri said...

OK, so I can understand most of my singleton votes, but really, how the fuck does everybody forget Kekilli so quickly? It's not like the film or its maker vanished off the face of the earth (as happened with, say, ME WITHOUT YOU). I was sure this performance would place pretty high. But no, I guess Bjork was taking up all that space.

Would it have killed you fuckwits to take your misplaced love for Akin's THE EDGE OF HEAVEN and redirect it towards something worthy, please?

(Don't take that personally buds, you know I love you all. Also, what the fuck is wrong with you people.)
