Skandies: #9

Picture: Toy Story 3 (105/9)
Director: Bong Joon-ho, Mother (110/11)
Actress: Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine (139/14)
Actor: Ben Stiller, Greenberg (108/14)
S. Actor: Jim Broadbent, Another Year (97/8)
S. Actress: Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom (126/10)
Screenplay: Michael Arndt, Toy Story 3 (121/10)
Scene: Zero-g hallway fight, Inception (55/5)

[Hooray, it's also already on YouTube.]

HISTORY:

Oddly, Bong previously placed 13th for The Host (2007), though the film itself didn't make the top 20, but did not make the cut for Memories of Murder, which did.

Broadbent makes his first appearance since 2001, when he placed 9th for Moulin Rouge!; he also finished 3rd in the lead category for Topsy-Turvy in 1999. Williams' history was detailed below when she placed for Shutter Island. Stiller and Weaver are new.

Arndt's screenplay for Little Miss Sunshine somehow managed to squeak in at #19 in 2006 (thanks mostly to a 30-point bomb from someone who's no longer with us and never really quite fit in).

Thanks for the history, Encyclopedia Mike!

I think the MuseBarometer can officially be retired. The two mega-point votes on my ballot both appear here at #9.

Something tells me this was less encyclopedic knowledge than a grievance long nurtured.

I never realized Pierce Hawthorne was a Skandie voter.

No grievance. The voter in question just stopped seeing enough films to be able to vote meaningfully. But while he's a smart guy, his taste was definitely at odds with the Skandie sensibility, such as it is. (And msic was making a very specific joke, but he had the wrong person in mind.)

Oh, good, it wasn't me.

Pretty amazing that Stiller has never placed before.

I'm just a longtime Skandie lurker (yes, they exist!), but... the same seems true for many voters, including (and perhaps especially) the awards' namesake.

Although you did say "such as it is".

Actually if you compare the awards' namesake's top tens with the collective ones over the years, they are not radically different. The awards' namesake continues to be puzzled by the group's crush on Chris Nolan, still loathes DOGSHIT (that's -ville, not -tooth), and will always wish he was not the awards' namesake, but feels there are more embarrassing things to be named after (poor Mr. Globe in his opinion).

Fair enough. I just clicked through to Collins' best picture picks in 2006 and Sophie Scholl and (especially) Happy Feet stick out as not particularly Skandie-esque picks (and maybe The Queen and the aforementioned Little Miss Sunshine, although others did vote for those as well). But the same goes for Black Dahlia, The Good German and Deja Vu. No disrespect, variety is the spice of life etc. etc. But I don't think either one deviates that much more from what could be considered 'the norm' than the other.

FWIW, the mystery ex-Skandie-voter-who-doesn't-see-enough-movies-anymore wasn't me, either.
