Skandies: #9

Picture: Only Lovers Left Alive (97/12)
Director: Tsai Ming-liang, Stray Dogs (116/11)
Actress: Brandy Burre, Actress (84/8)
Actor: Bill Hader, The Skeleton Twins (100/8)

(For those who haven't seen the film, this is a Beau travail kind of deal—it's not so much the dance itself that's remarkable as the context in which it's happening.)

HISTORY:

Tsai also placed 9th for What Time Is It There? (2002), and came in 6th for The Wayward Cloud (2007).

All of the actors are new (even Pryce), as are all three screenwriters.

I remember my 30-point bomb just failing to get Norma Khouri from FORBIDDEN LIES into the Top 20 ... so I'm pretty sure that makes Burre the first documentary subject to place in the acting categories?

Is Actress a documentary, though?

A very constructed and artificial one ... nobody would think Wiseman or the Maysles made it, sure ... but of course it is. Why not? Particularly since the very constructedness of its textuality is foregrounded.

I don't want to get into a Retarded Debate, but if there's any film that blurs the line between fiction and nonfiction to such an extent that one can't possibly use the words "of course" while placing it in one category or the other, it's Actress. That's precisely what's interesting about it. (And I especially don't see why foregrounding the artificiality would somehow make it more doclike, as you seem to suggest.)
