Skandies: #19

Picture: The Salesman (46/4)
Director: Alain Guiraudie, Staying Vertical (40/4)
Actress: Aubrey Plaza, Ingrid Goes West (48/5)
Actor: Colin Farrell, The Killing of a Sacred Deer (33/5)
S. Actor: Jeff Goldblum, Thor: Ragnarok (40/3)
S. Actress: Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Slack Bay (36/4)
Screenplay: Alain Guiraudie, Staying Vertical (51/5)
Scene: "My Way," Nocturama (37/4)

HISTORY:

Guiraudie placed 8th in Director and 11th in Screenplay for Stranger by the Lake (2014).

A day of weird and/or unhinged performances. Farrell makes it two in a row for Lanthimos, having finished at #5 last year for The Lobster; he also placed 13th in 2008 for In Bruges. Goldblum's sole previous appearance, at #15 in the same category, was for 2005's Dallas 362. Both women are new.

Before someone asks: While The Salesman received a qualifying release in 2016, and appeared on various lists and in polls that year, it did not open in New York City until January 2017. Skandies eligibility is based on NYC commercial runs, so it's a 2017 movie as far as we're concerned.

It's surprising that Farrell didn't land in the top 20 for TIGERLAND in 2000, since that film basically launched his career.

Good job other Goldblum and Plaza voters.

Not that surprising once you know that only five voters even saw Tigerland.

Travesty ... travesty ... poor Farhadi

But "Call Me" softens the blow.

well, "Call Me" would soften it more, but androgynous Shirley bassey lipsynch is quote softening too.

Jason -- I wasn't a voter back in 2000 but I probably would have 30-bombed Farrell. Still one of my favorite performances of that decade by anyone.
