Skandies decade poll: The ballots

Never really imagined, back in 1995, when I conducted the first edition of what would eventually be called the Skandies (long story, not worth it), that I'd still be at it a quarter century later, compiling the results of our third decade poll. And with a fair number of the same folks each time, remarkably enough. 31 voters submitted ballots (though one of them flaked out on sending in his Performance picks), and here are the results:

[Parenthetical numbers = points/votes]

When Dogville won ten years ago, I noted that while it wasn't my very favorite film of the aughts (that would be Memento), it seemed to me an apropos winner, by virtue of being perhaps the boldest film produced between 2000 and 2009. This inspired a truly epic argument in the comments, mostly between myself and Ryan Wu, who both recently reread it and were astonished and chagrined by the sheer amount of time and energy we wasted on such nonsense back then. (Though I, at least, also have a nostalgic affection for those days. We were so young and passionate. Or passionate, anyway.) Hopefully this time around Ryan will be too busy drafting amicus briefs for the Supreme Court to object when I observe that Under the Skin, though absent from my own ballot, likewise strikes me as the "right" choice. I have significant issues with the direction the film ultimately takes, but its first hour prompted, multiple times, a thought that I virtually never have about something that's not decades old: "This might genuinely be the single greatest film I've ever seen." Still bummed that it didn't actually get there, but to inspire that awestruck sensation for as long as it did...well, I'm perfectly happy to see it atop the list, even if it did just barely edge out my actual favorite of the decade.

(And lemme tell ya, that was a true test of my integrity as the Skandies' head honcho—and in this case, its sole tabulator. As you'll see below if you surf the ballots, I gave A Separation 26 points [out of a possible 30], and could easily have added another four without anyone knowing or suspecting a thing. Needn't even have affected any other films—I could have stolen a point each from Winter's Bone, Meek's Cutoff, The Imposter and mother!, none of which placed anyway. Can't say I wasn't tempted. But I'd always have known that I'd cheated, and it probably would have led to some horrific "Tell-Tale Heart" scenario. If the photo-finish winner had been, say, Inherent Vice, though? I dunno...)

As for the performances, I am bowled over—and I can't imagine that I'm alone, since Moaadi's name didn't come up once when folks were speculating in the Patreon comments. He's my own favorite, but I'd been hoping against hope that he might get three or four other votes, enough to land him at maybe #15. Similar to Barry Keoghan and Sonia Braga, who did in fact achieve exactly that (albeit at #17 and #14, respectively). Moaadi's just isn't the sort of flashy turn that one would expect to stand out above every other amazing performance over 10 years. Turns out there really weren't any such performances in the teens, or whatever we wind up calling that decade. Our three favorites the last time around were Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain), and Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive); each of them received more than 200 points, whereas Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake), at #4, got less than half that. In other words, there were those three and then everyone else, pretty much. Not the case this time. Moaadi tops the list with Staunton numbers, and while we had only 31 voters (vs. 35 in 2009), that alone obviously wouldn't create such a huge disparity. Just no juggernauts, I guess. Anyway, I'm gleefully surprised by our collective choice—the first foreign-language performance to place higher than #5. (And in fact our top two are subtitled.)

Let's see, what else? How about we break the films down by year (of premiere)?

2010: Certified Copy
2011: A Separation, The Tree of Life, Margaret, House of Pleasures
2012: Holy Motors, Frances Ha
2013: Under the Skin, Inside Llewyn Davis
2014: Boyhood, The Duke of Burgundy, The Grand Budapest Hotel
2015: Mad Max: Fury Road, Carol, The Forbidden Room
2016: Cameraperson
2017: Phantom Thread, Twin Peaks 2017 (parts 5-11)
2018: none
2019: Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, Parasite

I've maintained for a while now that 2011 is the greatest movie year in a good long while, and this poll confirms that pretty decisively. If we shift to year of commercial release, all five 2011 Skandie "nominees" placed in the decade's top 12. That's freakin' insane. In fact, both Kenneth Lonergan and Bertrand Bonello made films that outright won Best Picture—Manchester By The Sea in 2016, Nocturama in 2017—but did not place in the decade poll, whereas Margaret and House of Pleasures, which were #3 and #5 in 2011, did.

Also absent was our 2018 champ, Burning. In fact, you'll note that we ignored that year altogether. (Roma placed highest, at #53, with a single vote.) At this time I would like to very smugly cut and paste a passage from my 2018 Skandie wrap essay, in which I said:

With the sole quasi-exception of runaway winner Burning, there weren't really any 2018 releases that transcended "pretty darn good." In our collective opinion, that is. I track AVB enthusiasm throughout the year, using a variety of sources, and 2018 is the first year I can remember when not a single film—not even Burning—amassed real consensus numbers. As opposed to, say, 2011, when The Tree of Life won the Skandies but runners-up A Separation, Margaret, Certified Copy and House of Pleasures would each likely have finished first had they been released in almost any other year. (Probably not 2015, when Mad Max: Fury Road mowed down the competition in every critics' poll and survey known to man.) I expect all of those titles to figure heavily in our forthcoming survey of this decade's best films. Will any of last year's films? Roma likely has the best shot, actually, despite placing only 4th—the handful of folks who love it really love it. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if 2018 winds up being shut out entirely. There just wasn't much transcendence.

To quote a needle drop from the opening segment of Boyhood: HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO, ALL RIGHT! C'MON! DO BELIEVE I TOLD YOU SOOOOOOOOO.....

(Just to be comprehensive: The one other absent annual winner is Dogtooth, which was sadly ineligible because it's technically a 2009 film, though it was released in the U.S. and topped the Skandies in 2010. A casualty of the calendar. See also: First Cow, should I wind up conducting a fourth decade poll [by which time I will be over 60, omfg]. In addition, I should probably note for anyone newly seeing these results that while the third season of the fucking television show called Twin Peaks was not eligible in 2017, I ultimately and reluctantly decided that it was eligible for the decade poll, in the three separate chunks—parts 1-4, parts 5-11, and parts 12-18—that screened in a vaguely film-like way at the Museum of Modern Art in December of that year. Each only screened once, but there's no week-long-run restriction in this case—I want to open it up to undistributed films, though those never actually get any traction. Excepting this "film," I guess. Anyway, at least all three chunks didn't place, which I was worried might be the case for a while there. Feel free to mentally elide it and add The Wolf of Wall Street at #20, if you prefer.)

Other random observations:

• Looking at all three decade polls, the Coen Brothers have by far the best record. In fact, this is the first decade in which they've landed only one film in the top 20, rather than two. (Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink in the '90s, The Man Who Wasn't There and No Country for Old Men in the '00s.) The only other director who's placed all three times is Tarantino: Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol. 1, and OUATIH. Wong Kar-wai and Lars von Trier miss for the first time. (So does Edward Yang, sigh.) Todd Haynes and Wes Anderson are back after a decade off. Two in a row for Lynch, PTA, Malick, and Linklater.

• Not a shocker: Daniel Day-Lewis is the most decade-honored actor, cited twice for each of the past two polls (and outright winning Performance for the aughts). There's so much competition that repeats are quite rare—of this decade's top 20, only Day-Lewis, Ralph Fiennes and Isabelle Huppert had placed previously. It's the first decade without a Julianne Moore performance directed by Todd Haynes. (But Blanchett placed for Carol, so he's three-for-three. So is Von Trier: Emily Watson, Björk, Kirsten Dunst. Actually this is the first decade in which neither the Picture nor the Performance victor is LvT-related, as Watson won 20 years ago and Dogville won 10 years ago.) And we couldn't find room for Billy Bob this time. Heath Ledger (who placed twice in the '00s): See Edward Yang.

• Nine of the top 20 films premiered at Cannes. No other festival was even close. There are three from Sundance, two that are technically from Telluride (though as I recently told someone on Twitter, I consider that more of an expensive resort weekend that happens to preview some movies), two from Berlin, one from Toronto, and exactly none from Venice. (Under the Skin played there, but it's one of the Telluride films.) Plus three that eschewed the fest circuit altogether. One from Showtime! Ye gods.

• It doesn't have the highest average—Frances Ha squeaked in with just two votes—but a special Passiondex award to The Forbidden Room, which apart from Twin Peaks is the only non-"nominee" (#7, 2015) to make the list. Likewise to Toni Collette, who managed only 6th place in 2018 but was the beneficiary of our newest voter Luis Calil's evident obsession with Ari Aster. (Collette's is his #1 performance for the decade, Midsommar his #2 film.) Maybe I should have done more vetting there. Just kiddin', Luis. Sort of.

• I confess to being a bit troubled by the #SkandiesSoWhite nature of the Performance results. Sonia Braga made it (such a pleasant surprise), and I guess there's some dissension regarding whether or not various Iranian ethnic groups should be considered white. But that's it. None of our recent African-American (or -British) winners—Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Regina Hall, Lupita Nyong'o—even really came close; the highest-placing black actor was previous decade finalist Samuel L. Jackson, for The Hateful Eight. Down at #44. (I voted for Kaluuya and for Regina Williams in Life and Nothing More, but gave neither more than seven points, so it wasn't super helpful.) Could be happenstance, I guess, but more likely there's some unconscious, culturally amplified racism at work—especially considering that Nyong'o won Actress pretty handily last year, but received just one lonely vote, while second-place finisher Elisabeth Moss placed 12th. Likewise Day-Lewis and Chalamet over Kaluuya. (Though, to be fair, Day-Lewis and Kaluuya literally tied in 2017, with the tie broken by Kaluuya receiving two additional votes. Which indicates that there in fact was more passion for Day-Lewis.) On the other hand, there are similar instances that don't involve race at all, e.g. Cate Blanchett placing for Carol even though she only managed #5 in 2015, whereas outright winner Rooney Mara got just one decade vote. What sticks and what doesn't seems quite unpredictable. Anyway, just felt like a grimace was in order. [DAYS LATER: I forgot to also grimace about only one of our 20 faves being directed by a woman. Voted for three others myself—Winter's Bone, Meek's Cutoff, The Loneliest Planet—but only the Reichardt came within spitting distance.]

• Along the same lines: Every single voter in this poll identifies as a dude, I believe. Never got a ballot from Rachel Jacobson (who did vote in the main survey last year), and the other two women currently on the roster have both abstained altogether for the past two years. As I noted a while back, most of the August Voting Body's female members over the years have dropped out, for various reasons; I've tried to recruit replacements, but it's proven quite hard to get anyone who isn't a longtime voter to stick around for long lately. (R.I.P. Roxane Mesquida. AVB-wise, that is—she's totally fine otherwise.) I've more or less resigned myself to the Skandies being, in essence, just a group of friends weighing in each year. Still, I'll keep trying. (My stubborn refusal to add anyone who writes about films professionally—meant to keep the Skandies from turning into a clone of other critics' polls—has become a real problem. I just don't encounter that many impressive amateurs since the nerd group died. Might need to relax that at some point, though it would also open the XY floodgates, as there are plenty of guys I'd have invited long ago if they didn't already vote in the Indiewire poll and whatnot.)

• Every decade, I fret that eliminating the gender division for performances will result in a heavily male-dominated field. That was indeed the case for the '90s poll, which was won by Emily Watson but included only four other women in the top 20. But the XX/XY breakdown was exactly ten and ten 10 years ago, and this time there are eleven women vs. nine men (though the guys are clustered at the top). Not bad for an all-male group.

• There are too many annual acting winners who didn't place (31) to mention—which makes sense, since we're talking about 40 performances vying for only 20 slots, and that's ignoring everyone who placed 2nd, 3rd, etc. I'm not surprised that e.g. Olivia Williams didn't make the cut for The Ghost Writer. (Still kinda surprised that she won, actually.) But I'd have bet a small sum on Kristen Stewart and Patricia Arquette, and also expected more backup for Jesse Eisenberg than I got—it was just me and Underscore. Oh, and since this was Philip Seymour Hoffman's final shot, his #21 finish, missing by just one point, is a bit sad. But, hey, I can reveal the complete list if I want to. And by god I will!

[Should be obvious, but points on the left, # of votes parenthetically on the right.]

"Nominees" receiving zero votes: Mother (Bong, not Aronofsky—I voted for that one), Moonrise Kingdom (really? not on my own ballot, admittedly, but I prefer it slightly to Grand Budapest; both films finished 2nd in their respective years), Her, Stranger by the Lake, Support the Girls, The Favourite, Uncut Gems, Marriage Story.

And finally, here are the ballots themselves. I didn't have the time/stamina to create a clickable version, but you can CTRL-F to your heart's content, or just browse.

Parenthetical numbers indicate points allotted; if none are present, then the voter specified 10 points apiece for the category. (A lot of folks did this, as you'll see. For the performances in particular.) Also Blogger's not a WYSIWYG kind of outfit, and I eventually gave up trying to make the spaces before and after the ruler lines uniform. Drives me nuts, but every time I tried to fix it, it would only get screwed up in a different way.

* Not an error. The Sleeping Beauty is the 2010 film directed by Catherine Breillat; Sleeping Beauty is the 2011 film directed by Julia Leigh.

** I screwed this up. The Exploding Girl got a commercial release in 2010, but it premiered in 2009, and was thus eligible for the previous decade poll, not this one. And in fact Dan voted for her in that one as well! Didn't catch it until I saw the repetition while belatedly compiling the ballots from ten years back. By that time I was already well into the countdown, and the odds of his substitution making any difference seemed quite slim, frankly. (Though Philip Seymour Hoffman did just miss, so you never know.) So I let it go.

Oh, something I'd meant to note but forgot about (I'm gonna add it to the bullet-point section, but am first sticking it here for those who already read the whole thing): Every decade, I fret that eliminating the gender division for performances will result in a heavily male-dominated field.

My heart is human. My blood is boiling. My brain IBM.

I make no apologies for my Collette 30-point bomb, but I did also put Sonia Braga on the list.

That was the stupidest movie nerd argument of all time, and god knows we've gotten into a few. Anyway, appreciate your tireless work on this long-running project.

Odds are nobody will see this but I forgot that Atli sent me his prediction for the top 10 shortly after I started the countdown. Largely correct apart from The Master, which didn't even make the top 50. (Actual finish noted parenthetically so you don't have to scroll up.)

I didn't attempt a prediction myself, and if I'd done so, it, too, would likely have been inaccurate, on account of my not being a robot.
