Skandies: #14

Picture: Putty Hill (61/4)
Director: Lynne Ramsay, We Need to Talk About Kevin (72/10)
Actress: Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady (80/7)
Actor: André Wilms, Le Havre (63/5)
S. Actor: Nick Nolte, Warrior (65/6)
S. Actress: Shailene Woodley, The Descendants (101/12)
Screenplay: Lee Chang-dong, Poetry* (49/7)
Scene: No reason, Rubber (65/8)

* Interesting note: Of the seven Best Screenplay finalists announced so far, only one is for a film that placed in Best Picture. (Not meant to be a guessing game—obviously the one is The Tree of Life.) Seems to suggest that as a group we ultimately value direction far more than writing.

HISTORY:

Ramsay placed 16th in 2002 for Morvern Callar. Insufficient love for Ratcatcher.

This is Streep's 8th appearance in the top 20, though that's far from the all-time record she boasts in the Oscars. (On the other hand, the Skandies have only been around since 1995.) It's her weakest finish ever, no doubt because so few people cared to see the movie. Previously:

1s. Adaptation. (2002)
3s. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
5. Julie & Julia (2009)
5s. A Prairie Home Companion (2006)
8. One True Thing (1998)
8s. The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
12. Doubt (2008)

It's also Nolte's weakest finish, out of five total; he previously placed 3rd and 11th in the lead category for Affliction (1998) and The Good Thief (2003), respectively, as well as 8th and 2nd in Supporting for The Thin Red Line (1998) and Clean (2006), respectively. Wilms and Woodley are new.

Lee's only previously Skandie-eligible film was Oasis, which did not place in Screenplay.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do the numbers in brackets mean?

Number of points/votes.

Hey Mike D'Angelo, are you ever gonna catch up with HANNA?

If my calculations - after a hasty search through the Skandies archives - are correct, Putty Hill has the highest point-per-vote average since Silent Light? I'll have to watch it again to see what I missed (liked it a good deal, but nothing to get passionate over).

While I did kind of flub nr. 14-20 I'm still pretty sure I had the right 13 films in the top 13, but possibly in a slightly different order. I now predict that tomorrow's film will be TUESDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS.

Also I rather doubt md'a would like HANNA, anyway. But will he ever see RUBBER? That one might be a little more up his alley. Or not, It's not always easy to tell.

Yes, but that's not very meaningful given that it only got four votes total. Half its points (minus one) came from a single 30-point BEST FUCKING FILM OF THE YEAR BOMB!

And I don't get the love at all. I'll watch it again at some point, but the first time it really just seemed like Porterfield artlessly fetishizing the mundane.

Bzzt!

I'm even less inclined to see Rubber after not really being that tickled by this popular scene from it, I have to say.

It is awesome that this picture finished above BEGINNING.

Oh, I'll just go back to ignoring my mild admiration, then.

It is awesome that this picture finished above A PICTURE I HAVE NOT SEEN BUT JUST ASSUME IS STUPID.

You are a retard.

This Is What Love Feels Like.

This Is What Marketing Looks Like, retard.

Speaking of, did Christopher Plummer get an Oscar nomination for playing a retard in this picture or for having cancer, I forget which one.

Also it is awesome that the ineffective SHITTY YEAR has not made an appearance so far. Hopefully this trend continues!

You are an anonymous retard.

Putty Hill's screenplay was 20th.

@Daniel

Actually #20 was Margin Play. I think you're confused by Matthew Porterfield placing at #20 for direction.

"seemed like Porterfield artlessly"

PUTTY HILL (like BEGINNERS) is one of those films that just missed my top ten. Say what you want about it but the term "artless" is way off. If anything I found it too "artful" in its conception.

@GlenH

Um... Oops. You're right- not sure what happened to my brain there.
